How To Stay Warm While Camping With Heated Blankets

If you’ve ever longed to jump into a warm, cozy bed on a chilly winter night, a camping heated blanket needs to be top on your shopping list for RV accessories.

What Are Electric Heated Blankets?

It looks and behaves like any other blanket, with one exception:  it has an electrical current running through it.  Plug it in and adjust the temperature to your liking, and you’ll have your very own toasty bed.

Why Use Heated Blankets For Camping?

Comfort: If you camp in colder climates, a heated blanket is the perfect accessory to keep you warm when the thermometer dips below freezing or when you just want to take the chill off.

  • For the perfect night’s rest, heat up a cold bed 15 minutes before climbing in.
  • If sitting by the campfire, use an extension cord or a battery-operated blanket to warm the sides of your body that a campfire can’t reach!
  • Even watching a little late-night TV is more comfortable, when you use a heated blanket.

Save Energy: You can set the furnace on a lower temperature and still stay cozy with a heated blanket, saving you energy by warming up your bed and not the whole RV.

  • Depending on the heat setting and the number of hours used, a typical electric blanket can consume up to 200 watts of power an hour, or about 2 kilowatt-hours a day (for 10 hours’ use).  In contrast, an RV heater uses approximately 20 kilowatt-hours a day.

How to Choose The Right One

Power Source: Most blankets are AC-powered, but there are also battery-operated electric blankets available.  Several models of “throws” (smaller blankets to throw over your legs while sitting) even have a 12-volt plug for use in autos and RVs.  That is to say, you will have to decide which model is best for you.

Materials: Camping heated blankets are made from a variety of materials including polyester plush, fleece, and wool.

Machine Washable: Many heated blankets advertise that they are machine washable. Yet, the electrical components of the blanket don’t hold up well to many washings. Instead, try spot-cleaning them to keep the electrical components in good shape.

Controls: Some smaller heated blankets offer single controls that will heat the entire blanket.  On the other hand, larger sizes like the queen or king models have dual controls, allowing you and your partner to choose the amount of heat on each half of the blanket.  Usually, these controls have several levels of heat from which to choose.

Auto-Off: A nice comfort and safety factor is an automatic-off feature that turns the blanket off after 8 to 10 hours of use.  Some heated “throws,” intended for use while sitting on a sofa or chair, even have a 4-hour auto turn off choice.

Are Electric Heated Blankets Safe?

Today’s camping heated blankets are safe. However, if you are using an old or damaged blanket, there could be a fire risk. Over time, the electrical wiring can become worn or damaged.  In short, upgrade to a new blanket or throw with an auto-off feature to avoid overheating and to save energy.

You will find that winter chill is definitely easier to face with an electric blanket in your toolkit!

  • Loved the article on the Electric blankets but wanted to mention that we use a Mattress Warmer at home and in the RV when we travel. We like it better than the weight of the electric blanket on top of us because it warms the sheet you lie on and is great to crawl into bed with a nice warm mattress/sheet to lie on. We currently have a Sunbeam Mattress Heater with dual controls, queensize. Of course, if you want it for the car or outside round the campfire, then the electric blanket is your answer. Just a thought to pass on maybe.

    • Thanks so much for your comment, Valerie! The heated mattress pad sounds awesome - might have to add it to our list! :D
